The first object to land on the Moon was Luna 2, a Soviet spacecraft. It impacted the lunar surface on September 13, 1959.

While Luna 2 was the first object to touch the Moon, it was not a controlled landing. The first *soft landing* on the Moon was achieved by the Soviet spacecraft Luna 9 on February 3, 1966.
