  • Understanding the Waxing Gibbous Moon: What You Need to Know
A "second quarter moon" is a bit of a misnomer. It's actually more accurately called a waxing gibbous moon.

    Here's why:

    * Moon Phases: The moon's phases are determined by how much of the sunlit side of the moon we can see from Earth.

    * First Quarter: At the first quarter, we see half of the moon illuminated, and it appears like a half-circle on the right side.

    * Waxing Gibbous: After the first quarter, the illuminated portion of the moon continues to grow, becoming larger than a half-circle. This is the "waxing gibbous" phase.

    * Full Moon: At the full moon, the entire sunlit side of the moon faces Earth.

    * Second Quarter: There's no official phase called "second quarter".

In summary, "second quarter moon" is an informal way to refer to the waxing gibbous phase, which occurs after the first quarter and before the full moon.
