  • What are Auroras? Understanding the Northern & Southern Lights
Brilliant light displays that occur in the ionosphere are called auroras.

    Specifically:

    * Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) in the Northern Hemisphere

    * Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) in the Southern Hemisphere

These spectacular light shows are caused by charged particles from the sun (solar wind) interacting with the Earth's magnetic field and atmosphere in the ionosphere.
