  • Hubble's Law: Understanding the Expanding Universe
Edwin Hubble made the groundbreaking observation that galaxies are moving away from each other, and the farther away a galaxy is, the faster it is moving. This is known as Hubble's Law.

He reached this conclusion by studying the redshift of light from distant galaxies. Redshift occurs when light from an object moving away from us is stretched, making the light appear redder. The more distant the galaxy, the greater the redshift, indicating a faster recessional velocity.

This observation was a major breakthrough in our understanding of the universe, providing strong evidence for the expanding universe theory.
