Here's why:
* Exosphere: Mercury does have a very thin, almost negligible layer of gas called an exosphere. This exosphere is made up of atoms that are constantly escaping into space.
* Lack of Gravity: Mercury's low gravity is a key reason it can't hold onto an atmosphere.
* Solar Wind: The constant bombardment of the solar wind also strips away any gas molecules that Mercury might try to hold.
While Mercury has a trace amount of gas, it's not considered a true atmosphere like the ones found on Earth, Mars, or Venus.
