  • Understanding Stellar Magnitude: Apparent vs. Absolute Brightness
The measure of a star's brightness is called its magnitude.

There are two types of magnitude:

    * Apparent magnitude: This is how bright a star appears to us on Earth. It's influenced by both the star's intrinsic brightness and its distance from us.

    * Absolute magnitude: This is the brightness of a star if it were located at a standard distance of 10 parsecs (about 32.6 light-years) from Earth. This allows us to compare the true intrinsic brightness of stars.
