  • Uranus's Orbit & the Discovery of Neptune: A Historical Account
Astronomers noticed a strange pattern in the orbit of Uranus, and it led them to discover Neptune.

    Here's how it happened:

    * The Anomaly: Uranus's orbit didn't quite follow the path predicted by Newton's law of gravity. It seemed to be slightly perturbed, as if another massive object was tugging on it.

    * Urbain Le Verrier and John Couch Adams: Two astronomers, Urbain Le Verrier and John Couch Adams, independently calculated the position of this unseen object based on Uranus's erratic orbit.

    * Johann Gottfried Galle: Using Le Verrier's calculations, Johann Gottfried Galle, an astronomer at the Berlin Observatory, observed a new planet in the predicted location. This was Neptune.

The discovery of Neptune through the anomalies in Uranus's orbit was a triumph of scientific deduction and a testament to the power of observation and calculation. It also provided further support for Newton's law of gravity.
