  • Understanding Stratus Clouds: Formation, Characteristics & Weather
The clouds that cover the sky and are layered are called stratus clouds.

    Here's why:

    * Stratus means "layer" or "sheet" in Latin.

    * Stratus clouds form in low altitudes and are often gray and featureless.

    * They can cover the entire sky, creating an overcast look.

    * They are often associated with drizzle or light rain.

There are other types of layered clouds, but they are higher in the atmosphere and have different characteristics.
