  • Saturn Exploration: Spacecraft That Revealed the Ringed Planet
Saturn was not "discovered" in the sense of being found for the first time. It has been visible to the naked eye since ancient times.

However, spacecraft have greatly enhanced our understanding of Saturn. Here are some of the most notable:

    * Pioneer 11 (1979): The first spacecraft to fly by Saturn, providing the first close-up images of the planet and its rings.

    * Voyager 1 and 2 (1980 & 1981): These missions provided even more detailed images of Saturn, its rings, and its moons, including the discovery of several new moons.

    * Cassini-Huygens (2004-2017): This mission, a joint effort of NASA, ESA, and the Italian Space Agency, orbited Saturn for over a decade, sending back an incredible amount of data about the planet, its rings, and its moons. This mission revolutionized our understanding of Saturn.

While these are the most famous, other spacecraft have contributed to our knowledge of Saturn, such as the Voyager 1 and 2 missions which have provided valuable information about the outer Solar System.

It's important to note that the term "discover" in astronomy often means "first detailed observations," as the human eye could see Saturn long before telescopes.
