  • Galileo and Saturn: The Story of the First Telescope Observations
Galileo did not discover Saturn. While he was the first person to observe the planet through a telescope in 1610, he did not recognize it as a planet.

    Here's what happened:

    * Galileo's Observations: He saw what he described as "ears" or "handles" on either side of Saturn. This was due to the rings, but his telescope was not powerful enough to resolve them clearly.

    * Misinterpretation: He couldn't fully explain what he saw and initially thought it might be a triple-planet system.

    * Later Discoveries: It wasn't until 1655 that Christiaan Huygens, using a more powerful telescope, identified the appendages as a ring.

So, while Galileo's observations were a crucial step in understanding Saturn's appearance, the discovery of its rings is credited to Huygens.
