Most orbits around the sun, including Earth's, are elliptical.
An ellipse is like a slightly squashed circle. Earth's orbit is not perfectly circular, but it's very close. This means that Earth is sometimes slightly closer to the sun (perihelion) and sometimes slightly further away (aphelion).
