    Astronomers determine the speed at which a galaxy is moving using a technique called redshift. Here's how it works:

    1. The Doppler Effect:

    * Just like the sound of a siren changes pitch as it moves towards or away from you, light from objects in space also shifts in frequency depending on their motion relative to us. This is called the Doppler Effect.

    * When an object is moving towards us, the light waves are compressed, shifting towards the blue end of the spectrum (blueshift).

    * When an object is moving away from us, the light waves are stretched, shifting towards the red end of the spectrum (redshift).

    2. Measuring Redshift:

    * Astronomers use spectrographs to analyze the light coming from distant galaxies.

    * Spectrographs spread the light out into its component colors, creating a spectrum.

    * By comparing the spectrum of a galaxy to the spectrum of known elements on Earth, astronomers can identify specific spectral lines.

    * These lines are shifted in the spectrum of a galaxy based on its speed.

    3. Calculating Speed:

    * The amount of redshift (or blueshift) is directly proportional to the galaxy's speed.

    * Astronomers use a mathematical formula to calculate the speed from the observed redshift. This formula is based on the relationship between the speed of light, the observed wavelength shift, and the original wavelength of the spectral line.

    4. Hubble's Law:

    * Edwin Hubble discovered a crucial relationship between the redshift of galaxies and their distance from Earth. This is known as Hubble's Law.

    * Hubble's Law states that the farther a galaxy is, the faster it is moving away from us. This expansion of the universe is a fundamental concept in modern cosmology.
