  • Understanding Earth's Thermosphere: Height, Composition & Key Features
The layer that extends 85 km above Earth into space is the thermosphere.

Here's a breakdown of the layers of the atmosphere:

    * Troposphere: This is the lowest layer, where we live, and contains most of the atmosphere's mass. It extends up to about 12 km.

    * Stratosphere: This layer contains the ozone layer, which protects us from harmful UV radiation. It extends from about 12 km to 50 km.

    * Mesosphere: This layer is where most meteors burn up. It extends from about 50 km to 85 km.

    * Thermosphere: This layer is where the International Space Station orbits. It extends from about 85 km to 600 km.

    * Exosphere: This is the outermost layer, where the atmosphere gradually fades into space. It extends from about 600 km upwards.
