  • Gemini Program: Pioneering Astronaut Training for Spaceflight
The US space project that gave astronauts practice piloting spacecraft and working in space was the Gemini program.

    Here's why:

    * Focus on spaceflight: Unlike the Mercury program, which focused on single-person missions, Gemini was designed for two-person crews. This allowed for more complex maneuvers and tasks in space.

    * Long-duration missions: Gemini missions lasted for up to 14 days, giving astronauts extensive experience with living and working in space for extended periods.

    * Spacewalks (EVAs): Gemini missions included the first American spacewalks, giving astronauts hands-on experience with maneuvering outside the spacecraft.

    * Docking: Gemini missions included the first successful spacecraft docking, a critical technology for future missions like the Apollo program.

The experience gained from the Gemini program directly contributed to the success of the Apollo program, which landed the first humans on the Moon.
