  • Understanding Tropical Cyclones: Hurricanes, Typhoons & Cyclones
    The name for tropical cyclones that blow in a large spiral around a relatively calm center eye is a hurricane (in the North Atlantic, Northeast Pacific, and Central Pacific), a typhoon (in the Northwest Pacific), or a cyclone (in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean).

    While they have different names, these are all the same type of weather phenomenon: a rotating storm system with a low-pressure center that forms over warm tropical or subtropical waters.
