  • Magellanic Clouds: Irregular Galaxies Near the South Celestial Pole
The irregular galaxies lying near the south celestial pole are known as the Magellanic Clouds. They are two galaxies that are visible to the naked eye and are located very close to the Milky Way. The Magellanic Clouds are irregular galaxies, which means that they do not have a well-defined shape and structure like spiral or elliptical galaxies. These two galaxies are named after the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who first observed them during his voyage around the world in the 16th century.
