  • Meteorite Impacts on the Moon: Myth vs. Reality
It is not true that more meteorites hit the moon. In fact, the surface area of the moon is much smaller than that of the earth and therefore is less likely to be hit by a meteorite. Additionally, the moon lacks an atmosphere which means there is no air resistance to slow down meteoroids. As such, meteoroids that reach the moon's surface do so at a higher velocity and are more likely to crater the surface than they are to form a meteorite.
