Helicopters cannot fly in the stratosphere. The stratosphere is the second layer of Earth's atmosphere, and it begins at about 10 kilometers (6 miles) above sea level. Helicopters are not able to reach this altitude because they are not powerful enough. The air in the stratosphere is very thin, so it does not provide enough lift for helicopters to fly. Additionally, the temperature in the stratosphere is very cold, which can damage helicopter engines.
