  • History of Space Capsules: The Mercury Capsule and Early Spaceflight
The first space capsule was invented in 1958 by the United States.

The first space capsule was called the "Mercury capsule" and it was designed to carry a single astronaut into space. The Mercury capsule was launched on top of a Redstone rocket and it was able to reach an altitude of about 100 miles (160 kilometers). The Mercury capsule was later used to launch the first American astronaut into space, Alan Shepard, on May 5, 1961.
