  • What is the Stratosphere? Layers of Earth's Atmosphere Explained
The layer above the troposphere is called the stratosphere. The stratosphere extends from about 10 kilometers (6 miles) to about 50 kilometers (31 miles) above the Earth's surface. The stratosphere is home to the ozone layer, which protects the Earth from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.
