  • How Pluto's Moon Charon Protects Its Atmosphere
    Pluto's thin atmosphere is composed primarily of nitrogen, methane, and carbon monoxide. These gases are constantly escaping into space, but the presence of Charon, Pluto's large moon, helps slow down this process.

    Charon's gravitational pull creates a "tidal bulge" in Pluto's atmosphere, which extends out towards Charon. This bulge acts as a barrier to the escaping gases, making it more difficult for them to leave Pluto's atmosphere.

    In addition, Charon's gravity also helps to stir up Pluto's atmosphere, creating a more turbulent and chaotic environment. This turbulence helps to mix the gases in the atmosphere, preventing them from settling into layers and escaping more easily.

    As a result of Charon's influence, Pluto's atmosphere is able to persist for much longer than it would otherwise. Without Charon, Pluto's atmosphere would likely have dissipated into space long ago.

    Imagine Pluto's atmosphere as a bucket of water. If the bucket has a hole in it, the water will eventually leak out. However, if you put a lid on the bucket, the water will be less likely to escape.
