  • Heritage Turkeys: History, Characteristics & Why They Matter
Heritage turkeys belong to one of several rare turkey breeds that pre-date the commercial production of turkeys that are commonly consumed today. The breed is smaller and more compact than commercially produced turkeys, with different physical features and distinct feathers.

Heritage turkeys are not modified with modern breeding methods and are generally leaner and have darker meat. They also tend to have more flavourful meat but can be higher in price than commercially produced turkeys. Due to their rarity, they are sometimes regarded as a specialty or gourmet item.
