In the late 1970s, physicists Joseph Weber and Rainer Weiss began experimenting with large aluminum cylinders known as "Weber bars" and believed they had detected gravitational waves with them, sparking excitement and controversy in the scientific community. However, doubts and criticisms about the results eventually led to a reassessment, the emergence of more sensitive techniques, and the development of modern gravitational-wave observatories such as LIGO.
