  • Lituya Bay Megatsunami: The Largest Wave on Record - Alaska 1958
    Lituya Bay, Alaska, USA; July 9, 1958; 524 m (1,719 feet)

The Lituya Bay megatsunami was caused by a massive landslide that was triggered by an 8.0 magnitude earthquake. Approximately 90 million cubic metres of rock fell into the bay, displacing the water and setting off a wave that reached a height of over 500 meters (1,600 feet). The megatsunami caused extensive damage to the surrounding area and killed two people.
