Abstract:
The underrepresentation of women in academia has been a persistent issue, and addressing gender bias is crucial for promoting equity and diversity. This paper presents the findings of an adversarial analysis aimed at examining the progress made in gender fairness within the academic community. We employ advanced natural language processing techniques to analyze a large corpus of academic literature and identify potential gender biases in authorship, citations, and language usage.
Our adversarial approach involves training two models: a "gender-aware" model that explicitly considers gender information, and a "gender-agnostic" model that disregards gender. By comparing the predictions and outputs of these models, we can uncover subtle biases that might not be immediately apparent.
The results of our analysis reveal both encouraging signs of improvement and persistent challenges in gender fairness. We observe a positive trend toward increased representation of women as authors and cited researchers. However, gender disparities remain in certain fields and seniority levels. Additionally, our analysis detects gender-biased language patterns in academic texts, suggesting the need for more inclusive writing practices.
Our findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on gender bias in academia and provide valuable insights for stakeholders aiming to create a more inclusive and equitable academic environment. Introduction:
Gender bias in academia has been widely recognized as a systemic issue that hinders the advancement of women in research and scholarship. Despite efforts to address this problem, there is a lack of consensus on the extent to which gender fairness has improved over time. This study aims to shed light on this matter by conducting an adversarial analysis of gender bias in a large-scale academic literature dataset.
Methodology:
