  • Ancient Horse Remains Reveal Pagan-Christian Trade in European Sacrifices
Horse remains recovered from a well in the Netherlands provide new insights into the Pagan-Christian trade networks involved in the final horse sacrifices in Europe. Radiocarbon dating and isotopic analyses of the bones indicate that the horses sacrificed in the well in the 4th century CE originated from various parts of Europe, some as far as the British Isles and the Rhineland. The presence of exotic horse breeds suggests that these animals were part of a luxury goods trade network that also included other valuable items like silk and spices. This trade network demonstrates the interconnectedness of different regions of Europe during the late Roman period and underscores the role of horses as cultural symbols and objects of prestige. The findings also reveal a complex interaction between Pagan and Christian beliefs during the transition from one religion to another.
