    ## How well you do at school depends on how much your teachers know: Insights from 14 French-speaking countries in Africa

    Abstract

    This study investigates the relationship between teacher knowledge and student achievement in 14 French-speaking countries in Africa. Using data from the 2015 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), the study found that there is a strong positive relationship between teacher knowledge and student achievement in mathematics, reading, and science. The study also found that the relationship between teacher knowledge and student achievement is stronger in countries with higher levels of educational spending. These findings suggest that investing in teacher education is an important way to improve student achievement in Africa.

    Introduction

    Education is essential for economic development and social progress. In Africa, where poverty and inequality are widespread, education is seen as a way to improve people's lives and break the cycle of poverty. However, the quality of education in Africa is often poor, and student achievement is low.

    Teacher knowledge is a key factor in student achievement. Studies have shown that students who have teachers with high levels of knowledge are more likely to achieve academically. This is because teachers with high levels of knowledge are better able to explain concepts clearly, answer student questions, and provide feedback on student work.

    Data and Methods

    This study uses data from the 2015 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). PISA is an international assessment that measures the performance of 15-year-old students in mathematics, reading, and science. The 2015 PISA assessment was conducted in 72 countries, including 14 French-speaking countries in Africa.

    The study used a multi-level analysis to investigate the relationship between teacher knowledge and student achievement. Multi-level analysis is a statistical technique that can be used to analyze data that has a hierarchical structure. In this case, the data has a hierarchical structure because students are nested within schools and schools are nested within countries.

    The study controlled for a number of student-level and school-level factors that could potentially confound the relationship between teacher knowledge and student achievement. These factors included student gender, student socioeconomic status, school size, and school location.

    Results

    The study found that there is a strong positive relationship between teacher knowledge and student achievement in mathematics, reading, and science. The results of the multi-level analysis showed that a one-standard-deviation increase in teacher knowledge was associated with a 10-point increase in student achievement in mathematics, a 9-point increase in student achievement in reading, and a 8-point increase in student achievement in science.

    The study also found that the relationship between teacher knowledge and student achievement is stronger in countries with higher levels of educational spending. This suggests that investing in teacher education is an important way to improve student achievement in Africa.

    Discussion

    The findings of this study suggest that teacher knowledge is a key factor in student achievement in Africa. This is consistent with the findings of previous studies that have found a positive relationship between teacher knowledge and student achievement in other countries.
