  • Understanding Food Waste: 3 Common Types & How to Reduce It
According to a study published in the journal "Nature Sustainability", researchers identified three main types of food wasters:

    1. Unintentional Wasters: These individuals do not intentionally waste food, but they may do so due to poor planning or lack of awareness. They may buy too much food, forget about leftovers, or improperly store food, leading to spoilage.

    2. Intentional Wasters: These individuals deliberately throw away edible food, often due to high standards for aesthetics or personal preferences. They may discard food that is slightly bruised or past its best-before date, or they may simply not like the taste or texture of a particular food.

    3. Habitually Wasters: These individuals have developed habits that contribute to food waste, such as consistently buying more food than they need, cooking larger portions than necessary, or failing to use up leftovers. They may not be aware of the impact of their actions, or they may simply not have the time or motivation to change their habits.

Understanding these different types of food wasters can help in designing targeted interventions to reduce food waste. For example, educational campaigns may be effective in reducing unintentional waste, while financial incentives or behavioral change programs may be more effective in addressing intentional and habitual waste.
