The new rules, set by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), apply to small drones with cameras and other devices attached, and to drones that are flown within the first-person view (FPV) goggles. The rules require drone pilots to register their drones with the FAA, and to pass an aeronautics knowledge test.
Who needs to register their drone?
Anyone who owns a drone weighing more than 0.55 pounds and less than 55 pounds must register their drone with the FAA. You can register your drone online at the FAA's website: https://faadronezone.faa.gov/
What is the aeronautics knowledge test?
The aeronautics knowledge test covers the basics of how to fly a drone safely. The test includes questions on:
* Airspace regulations
* Collision avoidance
* Safety procedures
* Weather conditions
You can take the aeronautics knowledge test online or at an FAA-approved testing center.
What are the penalties for violating the new rules?
The FAA can impose civil penalties of up to $250,000 for violating the new rules. Criminal penalties of up to $250,000 and/or up to three years in prison can be imposed for intentionally violating the rules.
What are some of the safety recommendations for flying a drone?
The FAA recommends that drone pilots follow these safety recommendations:
* Fly your drone within your line of sight.
* Avoid flying near airports and other areas with restricted airspace.
* Be aware of the weather conditions and fly your drone only in safe flying conditions.
* Check your drone for safety before flying it.
* Fly your drone responsibly and respect the privacy of others.
