  • Supporting Key Workers & Their Families: A Guide for Employers
Key workers' dedication takes a toll on their families: What employers should do to help

Key workers have been on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, providing essential services to keep our communities running. Their dedication has been incredible, but it has also come at a cost to their families.

Many key workers have been working long hours, often in stressful and dangerous conditions. This has left them with little time for their families, and they may be feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, and anxious.

In addition, many key workers have had to deal with the added stress of caring for sick or elderly relatives, or of homeschooling their children. This has put a further strain on their time and resources.

The impact of key workers' dedication on their families is significant. Children may be feeling neglected, spouses or partners may be feeling resentful, and extended families may be feeling worried and concerned about their loved ones' well-being.

Employers have a responsibility to support key workers and their families during this challenging time. Here are some things that employers can do to help:

    * Provide paid time off. Key workers need to be able to take time off to rest and recharge, so employers should provide them with paid time off, including paid sick leave and mental health days.

    * Offer flexible work arrangements. Key workers may need to adjust their work schedules to accommodate their family responsibilities, so employers should be flexible about working hours and locations.

    * Provide access to counseling and support services. Key workers may be dealing with a lot of stress, so employers should provide them with access to counseling and support services, such as employee assistance programs (EAPs).

    * Be understanding and supportive. Employers should be understanding and supportive of key workers and their families, and should be willing to work with them to find solutions that meet everyone's needs.

By taking these steps, employers can help key workers and their families cope with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to provide the essential services that our communities need.
