  • Path to Medical Residency: Becoming an Army Doctor
    Step 1: Attend College

    - Complete pre-med coursework

    - Maintain a high GPA

    - Participate in extracurricular activities

    Step 2: Take the MCATs

    -Score high enough to be competitive for medical school

    Step 3: Apply to Medical School

    - Ensure that your medical school is accredited by the LCME

    - Submit an application that demonstrates your academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and personal statement

    - Interview with the medical schools to which you are accepted

    Step 4: Complete Medical School

    -Attend and complete medical school

    - Earn your MD or DO degree

    Step 5: Apply to the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP)

    - This program pays for medical school in exchange for a commitment to serve as an Army physician.

    - Apply while in medical school

    - Be prepared for a competitive application process

    - If accepted, sign a contract to serve as an Army physician for a specified number of years

    Step 6: Attend Officer Basic Course

    - Complete the Army's Officer Basic Course after graduating from medical school.

    - This is a 6-week course that teaches basic military skills.

    Step 7: Complete Residency Training

    -After completing Officer Basic Course, you will begin residency training in your chosen specialty.

    - Residency training typically lasts 3-7 years.

    - During residency, you will work in a military medical facility and receive a salary and benefits.

    Step 8: Serve as an Army Physician

    -After completing residency training, you will be assigned to an Army medical facility.

    - You will provide care to soldiers, their families, and other military beneficiaries.

    - You may also be deployed to overseas locations.
