  • Meeting Plastics Recycling Goals: Challenges and Opportunities for Businesses
The global demand for plastics has been escalating at an unprecedented rate, primarily driven by its extensive applications in various industries such as packaging, construction, and automotive. While plastics offer numerous benefits due to their durability, versatility, and lightweight properties, this rapid growth has sparked concerns about environmental pollution and plastic waste management.

Addressing these concerns, a growing number of countries and organizations have established ambitious goals for reducing plastic waste through increased recycling.

Key Plastic Recycling Goals and Deadlines:

    1. European Union (EU) Plastic Strategy:

    • The EU aims to have all plastic packaging recyclable by 2030 and effectively reduce plastic waste to achieve a more circular economy.

    • Member states must meet ambitious recycling targets set for various plastic waste streams.

    2. United States Plastics Pact:

    • Businesses and governments pledged to achieve ambitious targets and milestones by 2025:

    i. Recycle or compost 50% of all plastic packaging.

ii. Ensure all plastic packaging is designed for recyclability, reusability, or composting.

iii. Achieve 20% average recycled content across all plastic packaging.

    3. UK Plastics Pact:

    • UK signatories under the pact committed to the following goals for 2025:

    i. Eliminate unnecessary and problematic single-use plastic packaging.

ii. Ensure all plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable, or compostable.

iii. Increase the recycled content of plastic packaging to 30%.

    4. Canada-Wide Strategy on Zero Plastic Waste:

    • By 2030, this national strategy strives to achieve a zero-plastic-waste future for Canada:

    i. Ensure that more than 50% of plastic waste, by weight, is diverted from disposal.

ii. Design 100% of plastic products and packaging to be compostable or recyclable.

Several industry giants and consumer brands have also established voluntary environmental targets tied to plastics recycling and reduction. Some key examples include:

    1. Coca-Cola: Aiming for packaging entirely recyclable by 2025.

    2. PepsiCo: Targets using 25% recycled PET material or equivalent alternatives in its plastic packaging by 2025.

    3. Nestlé: Plans to achieve 100% recyclable or reusable packaging by 2025.

Despite these ambitious goals, challenges remain in meeting these plastics recycling deadlines and targets. Key barriers include the fragmented nature of the recycling industry, the prevalence of mixed waste streams, consumer behavior, and the complex composition of some plastic products. Nonetheless, concerted efforts across the packaging, recycling, and end-use industries, coupled with innovative recycling technologies, play a vital role in transforming these intentions into reality.
