  • Understanding Eclipse Shadows: Umbra vs. Penumbra
During an eclipse, there are two distinct regions of shadow:

    * Umbra: This is the darkest part of the shadow, where the light source (Sun) is completely blocked. It's a cone-shaped region that extends directly from the eclipsing object (Moon or Earth).

    * Penumbra: This is the lighter, outer part of the shadow where the light source is only partially blocked. It's a wider, funnel-shaped region surrounding the umbra.

So, the two regions of shadow during an eclipse are the umbra and the penumbra.
