  • Apollo 11 Lunar Module: Crash Site and Fate of the Ascent Stage
The Apollo 11 Lunar Module (LM) is not currently orbiting the moon. It crashed onto the lunar surface on July 21, 1969.

    Here's a breakdown:

    * After the mission: After successfully returning Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to lunar orbit, the LM's descent stage (the part that landed on the moon) was jettisoned and crashed into the lunar surface.

    * Its location: The crash site is in the Sea of Tranquility, near the landing site.

    * No longer orbiting: The ascent stage, which carried the astronauts back to lunar orbit, was also jettisoned after docking with the Command Module, and it also crashed into the moon.

So, while the LM is no longer orbiting the moon, its remnants are still on the lunar surface!
