  • Solar System Speed: Orbital Velocity & Galactic Travel
The speed of our solar system isn't a simple answer because it depends on what you're measuring it against:

    * Around the Milky Way: Our solar system orbits the center of the Milky Way galaxy at an average speed of approximately 220 kilometers per second (137 miles per second). That's about 792,000 kilometers per hour (492,000 miles per hour)!

    * Relative to other stars: Because our solar system is part of a larger galactic structure, the relative speed to nearby stars can vary quite a bit.

    * Relative to the universe: The universe is expanding, and our solar system is moving along with it. This motion is difficult to measure directly, but it's estimated to be quite substantial.

So, there isn't one definitive answer to the question of how fast our solar system is moving. The speed depends on the reference point you're using.
