Here's why:
* The new moon is when the moon is directly between the Earth and the Sun. This means the sunlit side of the moon is facing away from us, and the dark side is facing Earth.
* It's basically invisible. Since there's no sunlight reflecting off the moon's surface towards Earth, it's essentially a black disk in the sky.
However, you can sometimes see the new moon just before sunrise or just after sunset. This is called a "new moon crescent." The very thin sliver of the moon becomes visible as it starts to move away from the sun's glare.
So, while you can't see the new moon itself, you might be able to catch a glimpse of the crescent moon shortly after it's "born"!
