  • Lunar Orbit & Phases: How Long Does It Really Take?
The moon does not circle the Earth every day. It takes approximately 27.3 days for the moon to complete one orbit around the Earth. This is called a sidereal month.

However, we see the moon go through its phases (new moon, waxing crescent, full moon, etc.) in about 29.5 days (called a synodic month). This is because the Earth is also moving around the Sun, and the moon's position relative to the Sun changes as it orbits the Earth.

So, while the moon does orbit the Earth relatively quickly, it doesn't complete a full circle every day.
