Lunar Orbit & Phases: Understanding the Moon's Journey Around Earth
The moon travels around the Earth approximately once every 27.3 days. This is called a sidereal month.
However, it takes about 29.5 days for the moon to go through all its phases (from new moon to full moon and back again). This is called a synodic month.
The difference between these two periods is due to the Earth's movement around the sun.
