    The Aurora Borealis (and its southern counterpart, Aurora Australis) occurs in the thermosphere.

    More specifically, it's within a region of the thermosphere called the ionosphere. This is where the auroras are created by charged particles from the sun interacting with the Earth's magnetic field.
