  • Understanding Temperature: The Average Molecular Motion
The measurement of the average amount of motion of molecules is called temperature.

    Here's why:

    * Kinetic Energy: The motion of molecules is directly related to their kinetic energy. The faster the molecules move, the higher their kinetic energy.

    * Temperature as a Measure: Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the molecules in a substance.

    * Higher Temperature = More Motion: A higher temperature indicates that the molecules are moving faster on average.

    * Lower Temperature = Less Motion: A lower temperature indicates that the molecules are moving slower on average.

Important Note: While temperature measures the average kinetic energy, individual molecules within a substance will have different speeds.
