  • Hooke's Law: Who Actually Formulated It & Its Origins
Robert Hooke did not formulate the law of elasticity.

The law of elasticity is often referred to as Hooke's Law, but it was not actually formulated by Robert Hooke.

While Hooke did make significant contributions to the understanding of elasticity, his work predates the formal statement of Hooke's Law. He stated his observations in 1676, using the Latin phrase "ut tensio sic vis" (as the extension, so the force). However, the mathematical formulation of the law, as we know it today, was developed much later by others.

It's important to note that Hooke's Law is an idealization and doesn't perfectly describe the behavior of all materials under all conditions.
