    The force between two surfaces in relative motion is called friction.

    There are two main types of friction:

    * Static friction: This acts on objects at rest and prevents them from moving. It's the force you need to overcome to start an object moving.

    * Kinetic friction: This acts on objects in motion and resists their movement. It's the force that slows down a moving object.

    Friction is a complex phenomenon with many contributing factors, including:

    * The nature of the surfaces: Rougher surfaces have higher friction.

    * The force pressing the surfaces together: The more force, the higher the friction.

    * The speed of relative motion: Kinetic friction can vary with speed.

    Friction is important in our everyday lives. It allows us to walk, drive cars, and write with a pen. It also plays a role in many industrial processes.
