  • Understanding Gases: Molecular Motion and Properties
The state of matter where molecules bounce off one another rapidly and act freely is gas.

    Here's why:

    * High Energy: Gas molecules have high kinetic energy, which means they are moving very fast.

    * Weak Intermolecular Forces: The forces holding gas molecules together are very weak, allowing them to move freely and independently.

    * Large Distances: Gas molecules are far apart compared to liquids and solids, giving them plenty of space to move around and collide with each other.

This rapid movement and freedom of motion are what give gases their characteristic properties like:

    * Expansion: Gases fill their container completely.

    * Compressibility: Gases can be compressed to a much smaller volume.

    * Diffusion: Gases mix readily with other gases.
