  • Understanding Equilibrium: How Balanced Forces Affect Object Motion
When the forces acting on an object are balanced, the object will be in equilibrium. This means one of two things:

    * The object is at rest. If the object was stationary to begin with, it will remain stationary.

    * The object is moving at a constant velocity. If the object was already moving, it will continue moving at the same speed in the same direction.

Key Point: Balanced forces do not mean the object is not moving, only that it's not *accelerating*.

    Example:

Imagine a book sitting on a table. The force of gravity is pulling the book down, and the table is pushing back up with an equal and opposite force. These forces are balanced, so the book remains at rest.

    In summary:

    * Balanced forces = No acceleration.

    * No acceleration = Object at rest OR object moving at constant velocity.
