  • James Clerk Maxwell and the Electromagnetic Theory of Light
The scientist who hypothesized that light was an electromagnetic wave was James Clerk Maxwell.

He developed a set of equations, now known as Maxwell's equations, that described the behavior of electric and magnetic fields. His work showed that these fields could propagate as waves, and he predicted that these waves would travel at the speed of light. This led him to conclude that light itself was an electromagnetic wave.
