  • Sound vs. Light: Do Both Need a Medium to Travel?
Sound requires a physical medium in which to travel, while light can travel through a vacuum.

    * Sound: Sound waves are mechanical waves that require a medium (such as air, water, or solids) to propagate. The vibrations of the medium particles transmit the sound energy. In the absence of a medium, there is no sound.

    * Light: Light waves are electromagnetic waves, which means they do not require a medium to travel. They can travel through a vacuum, such as space, as well as through transparent materials like air and glass.
