  • Velocity: Understanding Speed and Direction
When you describe both speed and direction, you are describing velocity.

    Here's why:

    * Speed is a scalar quantity, meaning it only has magnitude (how fast something is moving).

    * Direction is the path or course something is moving in.

    * Velocity is a vector quantity, meaning it has both magnitude (speed) and direction.

For example, saying a car is traveling at 60 miles per hour is describing its speed. But saying a car is traveling 60 miles per hour *north* is describing its velocity.
