  • Wave Propagation: Matter Types & Examples - Physics Explained
Waves can move through many types of matter! Here are some examples:

    * Solids: Think of sound waves traveling through a metal bar or seismic waves moving through the Earth.

    * Liquids: Waves on the surface of water are a classic example. Sound waves can also travel through water.

    * Gases: Sound waves travel through air, allowing us to hear.

    * Plasma: This is a superheated gas where electrons are stripped from atoms. Light and radio waves can travel through plasma, which is found in the sun and other stars.

It's important to note that the type of wave determines what kind of matter it can travel through. For example:

    * Mechanical waves need a medium (like a solid, liquid, or gas) to travel. Examples include sound waves and water waves.

    * Electromagnetic waves can travel through a vacuum (like space) as well as through matter. Examples include light, radio waves, and X-rays.
