  • Understanding Acceleration: What Causes a Change in Motion?
A change in motion that produces acceleration is identified by any of the following:

    * Change in speed: If an object speeds up or slows down, it is accelerating.

    * Change in direction: Even if an object maintains a constant speed, if it changes direction (like a car turning a corner), it is accelerating.

    * Change in both speed and direction: This is the most common scenario for acceleration. An object can be speeding up while turning, slowing down while turning, or even speeding up in one direction and then slowing down in another.

In summary, acceleration is the rate of change of velocity. Velocity is a vector quantity, meaning it has both magnitude (speed) and direction. Therefore, any change in speed, direction, or both will result in acceleration.
