  • Understanding Work: Force, Distance, and Energy Transfer
The quantity force times distance is called work.

    Here's why:

    * Force is a push or pull that can cause a change in motion.

    * Distance is the amount of space something moves.

When a force moves an object over a distance, it does work on that object. Work is a measure of the energy transferred to the object by the force.

Important Note: Work is only done when the force causes a displacement of the object. If the force doesn't cause the object to move, no work is done.
